The most basic element is size. The bedspread must fit the bed. The standard bed sizes are twin, full, queen and king, going from smallest to largest. You may also see California king, which is even larger than a standard king. Full is sometimes referred to as double. There are also sizes for younger children, and totally custom designs. Clearly if you try to put a queen size bedspread on a king size bed, there is going to be a shortfall somewhere.
Then there is the pattern. Plain could be considered a pattern. Once again there is a need to balance your preferences with the existing scheme in the room. If possible view a picture of the bedspread in the room where it will be used so you can see how well it fits in.
If you are a fan of lighthouses, you can quickly and easily give your bedroom a face lift by adding a lighthouse bedspread to your room. In fact, you might be surprised how great an entire ensemble of lighthouse themed bedding will look in your room. You can choose among a wide variety of bedding, including sheets, pillow shams, bedspreads, and comforters. Complete the look with lighthouse curtains and you've got a lighthouse themed sanctuary.
One idea that is gaining popularity with lighthouse fans is to buy a lighthouse bedspread from a company that will let you upload your own photo of a lighthouse and then they will create the bedspread from your photo. This can turn into an extra special cover if you have visited a famous lighthouse and taken your own pictures. What a way to memorialize your trip!
