A knitter can make a patchwork quilt out of colored squares. She can make small swatches using the basic knit stitch until she has enough to constitute the size of a blanket. Once she has reached that point, she only has to sew the squares together by hand to create a hand-made quilt. She can alternate squares in the recipient's college colors or choose shades that coordinate with the decor of the room in which it will be placed. Lace, fringe or some other kind of trim can be sewn around the edges on both sides of the blanket.
Customized blankets make great gifts because they will be used. Unlike last-minute gifts that end up being forgotten, customized blankets will not go to waste. One does not have to know how to sew to make a personalized blanket. There are websites that will do all the work for you.. All that is necessary is a photograph or image that holds some meaning for the intended recipient of the blanket. The picture can be of anything. It can be a picture of the giver and the recipient together. If the recipient has just gotten married, a picture of the happy couple at the altar would make for a beautiful blanket. The same goes for pictures with new babies. Any major life event can be commemorated on a personalized blanket.
